Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems, or LEV for short are specifically designed to protect employees from harmful, airborne contaminates in the work place such as fumes, mists, dusts, vapours or gases in the workplace. An LEV system is more commonly referred to as an extract system. But this is a very broad description that can cover a wide range of products and solutions. From simple recirculating, under the bench units - to site wide, centralised extraction systems. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and the Health and Safety at work Act your are legally required to provide protection from harmful airborne contaminates for any one whom could be effected. This primarily means employees but could also include contractors, members of the public and the wider environment as a whole. Many industries and work places need an LEV system designed for their specific application and materials, be it simple solder fume up to combustible dusts and corrosive vapours. The aim is to prevent the harmful contaminates from entering the breathing space of the operator, as many common products used in day to day work places can be harmful if breathed in, even small amounts over time. Most LEV systems (but not all) comprise of: • Capture Device: This is where the contaminate "cloud" enters the LEV. This can be an arm, hood or similar. • Ducting: This can be simple flexible ducting or more complex steel ducting. Ducts conduct the contaminated air from the hood to the filters and/ or discharge point. • Air Cleaner or Filter: These clean or filter the contaminates out of the air stream before discharging the air • Air Mover: More commonly referred to as a Fan. These power the system. • Exhaust or Discharge: This releases - or "vents" the extracted air into a safe place.
